History
- 1932 Bank Melli receives the exclusive right to issue Iranian banknotes and begins issuing notes denominated in rials.
- 1960 Central-bank duties pass from Bank Melli to the newly established Bank Markazi.
- 2025 A law provides for a redenomination at 10,000 current rials for one new rial, retaining the rial name and allowing preparation and transition periods; approval does not itself mean that replacement notes have entered circulation.
