- 1913The Federal Reserve Act, signed on 23 December, creates the Federal Reserve System, which issues Federal Reserve Notes.
- 1944The Bretton Woods conference sets up fixed exchange rates, with currencies pegged to the US dollar, which is convertible to gold at $35 an ounce.
- 1971The US ends the dollar’s convertibility into gold for foreign governments on 15 August.

The Rwanda Franc is issued by the National Bank of Rwanda.
- 1960The Banque d’Emission du Rwanda et du Burundi is created by royal decree of 21 August to issue a joint franc for Rwanda and Burundi.
- 1964The National Bank of Rwanda is established by a law of 24 April, in force from 19 May, to issue the Rwandan franc, ending the joint issuing arrangement.
