Build a travel budget in the currency you will spend
Work backwards from a euro or Canadian-dollar spending target, with room for rate differences and fixed fees.
Choose a destination-currency target
List costs in the currency used for the bill. A €600 hotel budget and a C$500 spending budget are different targets even if both are described as six hundred or five hundred. Separate costs already prepaid from those you still need to fund.
A reference converter helps translate that target into your home currency on a stated date. The ECB labels its references as informational; the Bank of Canada likewise describes its rates as indicative. Your card, bank or cash provider can use another rate and add charges.
Work backwards from the target
The examples below use assumed rates, reductions and fees. They are independent of the directory’s current snapshot. Here, the fixed fee is added to the home-currency funding needed, and the percentage reduction lowers the foreign currency received per home-currency unit.
| Spending target | Assumptions | Estimated home-currency outlay |
|---|---|---|
| €600 from GBP | 1.20 EUR/GBP; 2% rate reduction; £5 fee | 600 ÷ (1.20 × 0.98) + 5 ≈ £515.20 |
| C$500 from USD | 1.40 CAD/USD; 1% rate reduction; US$5 fee | 500 ÷ (1.40 × 0.99) + 5 ≈ US$365.75 |
These estimates are rounded to the nearest cent. Rounding up gives £515.21 or US$365.76 if the mathematical funding target must be met exactly. Actual provider rounding or additional fees can require more.
Keep quote direction consistent
If a quote says euros per pound, divide a euro bill by that quote to estimate pounds needed. If it says pounds per euro, multiply the bill instead. Write both currency units beside a rate before entering it.
Use the budget to explore a less favourable rate as well as the reference date. This is a scenario, not a forecast or a recommended buffer. A charge quoted in a third currency needs a separate conversion.
Compare the checkout amount
Before paying, compare the home-currency amount you will actually be charged and any separately disclosed fee. If presented with two currency options, check which party sets each conversion and compare the full costs rather than assuming the larger or smaller currency number is cheaper.
A chart does not establish whether a merchant accepts a currency, whether your card works there or whether a cash provider stocks particular banknotes. Confirm those details with the relevant provider.
